Prep baseball: Eyre agrees to be Saint Stephen's pitching coach

Another former big-league pitcher is joining Saint Stephen's baseball coaching staff.

Bradenton resident Scott Eyre, who spent 13 seasons in the majors and won a World Series ring with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2008, will work as the Falcons' pitching coach under new head coach Scott Sauerbeck.

Eyre appeared in 617 games, mostly in relief, for the Chicago White Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, San Francisco Giants, Chicago Cubs and the Phillies. He led the majors with 86 apperances in '05 while with the Giants.

No stranger to postseason baseball, Eyre had a 1.32 in 24 postseason games, and was especially good in the World Series. He appeared in three Fall Classics, two with the Phillies and one with the Giants, and didn't allow an earned run in 5 1/3 innings.

Sauerbeck, who told of Eyre's hiring Tuesday, was Saint Stephen's pitching coach for three years. He was named the head coach Monday.

Saint Stephen's announced Monday that Scott Sauerbeck has been hired as the school's new varsity baseball coach. He had served as the team's pitching coach the past three years.

Drafted by the New York Mets in 1994, Sauerbeck made his big-league debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1999. He was dealt from Pittsburgh to the Boston Red Sox in the summer of 2003, and pitched for Boston during that year's American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees.

Sauerbeck spent seven seasons in the majors, posting a 20-17 record and 3.82 in 471 games, all in relief.

Aside from the Pirates and Red Sox, Sauerbeck also pitched with the Cleveland Indians and Oakland Athletics.
