Prep wrestling: Manatee County's two state finalists
Lakewood Ranch's Hunter Reed and Manatee's Jesse Fulk are finalists at the state meet in The Lakeland Center.
Reed, a106-pound freshman in Class 2A and pictured above hugging his father, Kraig, who is also a Mustangs assistant coach, is the first Ranch wrestler to make the finals. He scored an 11-3 major decision over Tampa Jesuit's Jarrett Roop in the semifinals and goes up against Brandon's Frankie Bruno in the finals.
Bruno, 50-0, is ranked No.1 in the state at 106 in Class 2A. He has two pins and a major decision in this tournament.
Reed, who took fourth during last week's Region 3 meet, is 48-6. Prior to Reed, the highest a Lakewood Ranch wrestler placed at state was third (Cory Monteforte, 2006).
A 160-pound junior in Class 3A, Fulk (59-3) scored a first-period pin against Copper City's Eric Perez in the semifinals. He will meet Kissimmee Osceola's Fox Baldwin, a three-time defending state champion who is ranked No.1 with a record of 48-0.
Baldwin has defeated Fulk twice this season, including during the finals of last week's Region 2 meet in Kissimmee.
The finals begin 5:30 p.m.
